Leica cameras are known throughout the world for being extremely high quality. Up until now their digital cameras have not been as good as may have been expected from Leica. In particular the M8 which had problems with its sensor.
The S2 digital camera however is without doubt one of the best digital cameras ever made, at last in so far as concerns 35 mm SLRs. Leica’s aim is to create a 35 mm digital camera that offers the same quality as medium format cameras made by Hasselblad without the weight and in a much smaller size. The S2’s main selling point is its 37.5 megapixels compared to the 12 megapixels of most top end digital SLRs.
Leica cameras are expensive of course and the S2 digital camera is certainly no exception. It was launched in late 2008 and will be on sale in the summer fo 2009. The price for the body plus lens is expected to be somewhere around $22,000 US.
